System Requirements

Important note: We are not able to provide support for BackupAssist when installed alongside other third party backup applications which install their own VSS writers in place of Microsoft's own VSS writers as BackupAssist relies on these to operate successfully.

Backing-up Hyper-V Virtual Machines?

Supported Hyper-V Servers

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 (Server Core and Hyper-V Roles)
  • Windows Server 2012
  • Please note that backups to Clustered Shared Volumes (CSV)* are NOT currently supported on Server 2012 platforms
* IMPORTANT: If you are planning to use BackupAssist to back up a Hyper-V server which uses Clustered Shared Volumes we highly recommend that you read the following document to fully understand the implications and requirements to make successful backups:-

Quick Start Guide: Cluster Shared Volume

Specifically, please pay attention to the section that explains that you will need a local staging disk on the Hyper-V Host that has available space at least as large as the Virtual Machines being run on that Hyper-V Host. This staging disk can be a local SATA, SAS or external device such as USB / eSATA.

For installations where the Virtual Machine data stored is in the region of hundreds of Gigabytes the time it will take to mirror this data to the staging disk will be significant and may well mean that BackupAssist is not a suitable solution.
